This is the first in a series of public meetings to be held along the trail in early spring 2004, as a part of the District's planning effort to develop a comprehensive Concept Plan for the entire Metropolitan Branch Trail. The Metropolitan Branch Trail is an eight-mile multi-use trail connecting the Capital Crescent Trail and downtown Silver Spring, MD to Union Station and the Mall in the heart of Washington. In 2003, Montgomery County and the City of Takoma Park constructed segments of the trail along Takoma Ave. between Eastern Ave. and Montgomery College in north Takoma Park, Maryland.
Currently, the District of Columbia and Metro are constructing a half-mile segment of the trail in conjunction with the new New York Avenue Red Line Metro Station just north of Union Station.
In January 2003, the DC Department of Tranportation released an alignment study of the Takoma section of the trail. That study looked at five trail alignment options. With further assistance from a trail design consulting team (The Louis Berger Group and the Toole Design Group), the District has narrowed the field of viable alignments. Alignments and design options on both the east and west side of the railroad tracks will be presented at the March 2 workshop. The goals for the trail in the Takoma section are to provide as much trail access as possible for Takoma residents and business communities on both sides of the tracks, and safe, direct and efficient passage through the community for trail users traveling between Silver Spring and Ft. Totten and other points south.
